At Fogo de Chão, our vision has always been to serve our guests the most wholesome, high quality and safest food possible. It’s a tradition that comes from the Brazilian gaucho way of nurturing and harvesting foods with respect (“Respeito Pela Comida” in Portuguese).
This means we seek out vendor partners who share our beliefs and adhere to the globally recognized Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, and we pride ourselves in ongoing, mutual guidance and transparency. This shared respect – from traceable and sustainable sourcing to animal health and well-being – ensures we stay true to our commitment of offering the highest food quality and safety for our guests.
The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare are considered to be one of the gold standards when it comes to animal welfare across the globe. First established by the Farm Animal Welfare Council (now Committee) and widely adopted by organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Five Freedoms encompass both the mental and physical well-being of certified animals and aim to ensure that they have appropriate space, lighting, air quality, food and water. The Five Freedoms include:
– Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
– Freedom from Discomfort
– Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease
– Freedom to Express Normal Behaviors
– Freedom from Fear and Distress
We at Fogo currently work with and seek out partners who share and adhere to these same beliefs.
When vetting suppliers with which we might consider partnering, we at Fogo de Chão request all provide animal welfare statements, third party audits for adherence, public hazard analysis and critical control points (HAACP) plans and sustainability certifications.
We have enjoyed long tenures with the most widely respected and responsible suppliers in the business. Our partners share our “Respeito Pela Comida” (“respect for food”), and we continually work together to ensure ongoing mutual guidance and transparency so we can deliver safe, high quality and delicious food to our guests.
Our guests want and deserve to know that their food is safe, sustainable and responsibly raised. That’s why in April 2019, Fogo announced a collaboration with HerdX, an agri-tech company that develops and manufactures technology such as tags and software to bring greater understanding and trust to the livestock industry. While our industry-leading partnership is still in the early stages, it is a clear next step towards our mutual goal of providing greater transparency in food sourcing through the use of technology.
